Free Will

DESIGNATION: A-112

THREAT LEVEL: DIRTY SOCK

“Is there such thing as free will?”

“How did you know about that? You're only supposed to have MISO clearance!”

“How did I know about what?”

“Oh you meant— nevermind.”

A discussion on Free Will

A-112, jokingly referred to by some as FREE WILL, or simply WILL, is a dangerous entity both empowered and held back by one simple fact: they can only do as they're told.

Anomaly Description

A-112 is a humanoid entity that resembles a long-haired figure in their late 20s, though their exact features— height, weight, eyes, and more— shift on closer examination. They are capable of anything they set their mind to, no matter how fantastical it may be. What keeps them from using this power to take over the world or warp reality as they see fit is the simple fact that they are entirely incapable of making a decision on their own.

Instead, someone else needs to make the decisions for them. Those observing A-112 from a short distance are able to directly influence their choices by simply narrating them, whether or not A-112 is able to see or hear. Following the catastrophe of Experiment #112-8, all narration is to be kept from A-112's direct perception, whether it's visual or auditory.

Of course I've used FREE WILL! Have you ever heard of Bissmas? The most bonderful time of the year? No, of course not! I had WILL steal it.

Dr. █████ was fired after this admission

A-112 has been narrated in a variety of scenarios, as the mundane 427th office worker in a non-existent company, as a powerful superhero that stopped a train from crashing with one hand, as a wizard capable of many magics, even as an intensely gifted chef. In each scenario, A-112 performed exactly what they were narrated doing, regardless of what should be realistically possible. No limit to their abilities is currently known, making them one of the greatest threats currently held by the ACF.

Anomaly Containment Procedures

A-112 is to be held deep underground in a remote facility, and observed 24/7. Personnel on site are to present them with choices, and covertly make decisions for them. Crucially, personnel are to ensure that A-112 never decides to leave the facility, while maintaining the illusion that they are free to leave at any time. No cameras are allowed within the facility, all observation is to be done via soundproof observation rooms throughout their enclosure.

Security teams are to patrol the facility at all hours, leaving no gap for potential outsiders to break in and take control of A-112. Knowledge of their existence is strictly to be kept to those with GUMBO clearance or above, personnel deployed on-site are to be given a cover story about a world-eater.

Logs for A-112

Experiment #112-8
Date: 2010/05/14
Head researcher: Dr. Wake
Anomaly: A-112

Description: A-112 was transported to the rural town of ██████ █████, Washington. There, Dr. Wake tailed them, and narrated A-112's actions via a mobile typewriter. The goal was to ascertain whether A-112 could be safely controlled in the wider world, if they could— the potential benefits would be innumerable.

Result: Everything went smoothly, at first. A-112 ate at the town's diner, ordering only what Dr. Wake wrote (A cheeseburger “with neither cheese nor burger”, which resulted in a pile of pickles and ketchup), and repeated the humiliating words Wake had typed after tripping the waitress.

Unfortunately, Dr. Wake spilled coffee on himself, and in his panic knocked finished pages of his narration onto the diner floor. Whether it was reading the pages or hearing Dr. Wake's panicked cry of “WILL IGNORED THE PAGES!” that lead to what happened next is unknown, but the catastrophic consequences meant an end to further field experiments.

Notes: A-112 is not to be let outside again, and narration is to be kept firmly out of their perception. After the manifestation of A-112-1 and subsequent disappearance of ███ civilians, the area is kept under ACF supervision for any future appearances of A-112-1. An Investigations team was deployed to find the missing Dr. Wake, but the trail went cold after finding his thermos on the shores of ████████ Lake.

Any personnel who find him are to report his location immediately, every day he does not return will be taken directly from his accumulated and future vacation time.

Author's Note

This article was made concurrently with the second APRA RPG: FREE WILL. The idea for the article came while I was working on the game, which was already set in a mysterious underground facility. It just fit perfectly in APRA, so I tweaked a few details to make it work. I'm happy to have gotten some extra APRA out of it, WILL is now an incredible asset for the ACF and a walking plot device that I may have to use sometime in a future story. Or not. Who knows what's in store?

The game's just one page, as it was written for this year's 200 Word RPG Jam, and it's completely free! You can play alone, or with as many friends as you like— and take turns making decisions for WILL! You can find it on my itch page here!
